The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu

The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu

Once upon a time, in West Java, there lived a wise king who had a beautiful daughter.   Her name was Dayang Sumbi.  She liked weaving very much.  One day, she was weaving a cloth. Suddenly, one of her tool fell to the ground.  She was very tired at the time so she was too lazy to take it.  Then she just shouted outloud.

“Anybody there?  Bring me my tool.  I will give you special present.  If you are female,  I will consider you as my sister.  If you are male, I will marry you”

Suddenly a male dog named Tumang came.  He brought her falling tool.  Dayang Sumbi was very surprised.  She regretted her words but she could not deny it.  So she had to marry Tumang and leave her father.  Then they lived in a small village.  Several months later they had a son.  His name was Sangkuriang.  He was a handsome and healthy boy. Sangkuriang liked hunting very much.  He often went hunting to the wood using his arrow.  When he went hunting Tumang always with him.

One day  Dayang Sumbi wanted to eat deer’s heart.

“Sangkuriang, will you hunt for a deer today? I want to eat a deer’s heart so much.” Asked Dayang Sumbi.

“Of course, mom. Whatever you want, I will give it for you.” Replied Sangkuriang. “Tumang, where are you? Come on, we have to hunt for a deer.”

Then Sangkuriang went to the wood with his arrow and his faithful dog, Tumang.  But after several days in the wood Sangkuriang could not find any deer.  They were all disappeared.  Sangkuriang was exhausted and desperate.

“Oh God, where can I find a deer? I don’t want to dissapoint my mom. Oh! I know,”

Sangkuriang then called Tumang and  kill him.  He did not know that Tumang was his father.  At home he gave Tumang’s heart to her mother.

“Sangkuriang, are you sure it’s a deer’s heart? You can’t lie to me! It is Tumang’s heart, isn’t it? Why did you kill him?” said Dayang Sumbi full of angry. She hit Sangkuriang at his head.  Sangkuriang was wounded.  There was  a scar in his head.    She also repelled her son.   Sangkuriang left her mother in sadness.

Many years passed and Sangkuriang became a strong young man.  He wandered  everywhere.     One day he arrived at his own village but he did not realized it.  There he met Dayang Sumbi.  At the time Dayang Sumbi was given an eternal beauty by God, so she stayed young forever.  Both of them did not know each other.  So they fell in love and then they decided to marry.

But then Dayang Sumbi recognized a scar on Sangkuriang’s head.

“Sangkuriang, why there is a scar on your head?” asked Dayang Sumbi.

“Oh, when I was a child, my mom hit me on my head.” Replied him.

Dayang Sumbi was very shocked. She knew that Sangkuriang was his son.  It was impossible for them to marry.  She told him but he did not believe her.  Sangkuriang wished that they married soon.  So Dayang Sumbi gave him a very difficult condition.

“Sangkuriang, if you want to marry me. I have a condition for you. I want you to build a lake and a big boat in one night. I need them for our honeymoon. Can you do that?”

“What! Impossible!. But, it’s okay. For you, I will do it. I can do that!”. Sangkuriang agreed.

With the help of genies and spirits, Sangkuriang tried to build them.  By midnight he had finished  the lake by building a dam in Citarum river.  Then he started building the boat.  It was almost dawn when he nearly finished it.  Meanwhile Dayang Sumbi kept watching on them.  She was very worried when she knew this.  So she made lights in the east.

“Huh? Troops, stop your work! It’s already dawn. The sun will start to rise. Quickly, go home, go home!” said the chair of the genies. They left Sangkuriang alone.

“Sangkuriang, you can’t finish my condition. It’s mean that you can’t marry me. You know?” said Dayang Sumbi.

“You cheated! You maked the light, so that my troops go. Because of that, I could not fulfill your condition.” Shouted Sangkuriang.

Sangkuriang was very angry. So he kicked the boat.  Then the boat turned out to be Mount Tangkuban Perahu.  It means boat upside down.  From a distant it looks like a boat upside down.

Ciung Wanara

Ciung Wanara

Long time ago in west Java there was a kingdom called Galuh Kingdom, ruled by King Barma Wijaya Kusuma.  He had two wives, Pohaci Naganingrum and Dewi Pangreyep.  At that time both of them were pregnant.  The king was very happy when Dewi Pangreyep gave birth to a baby boy.  The king named him Hariang Banga. Several months later Pohaci Naganingrum also gave birth.  But, Dewi Pangreyep had an evil plan.  She had prepared a baby dog and gave it to Pohaci.  Then she put the baby in a box and had it thrown to a river.  Lengser, the man who received the order to throw the baby in a river, put him in a safe box and gave an egg.

“Oh, Your Majesty,  Pohaci is an evil woman.  Last night he gave birth but her baby is a dog!  They are sinners.  God had punished them.  This a shame for Your majesty the King and the whole kingdom” said Dewi Pangreyep.

“There is no place here for sinners.  They must go to hell” shouted the king. He ordered his soldier to kill Pohaci and the baby. “Lengser ! Bring them to the wood and kill them!”

“Yes, Your Majesty” replied Lengser.

Lengser, who had to carry out the order, did not dare to do it.  He saved Pohaci instead.  Then  Pohaci lived in a remote village.

Meanwhile in a village next by the river, lived a couple of husband and wife.  Aki Balangantran and his wife Nini Balangantran.  They didn’t have any children.  Day and night they prayed to god to ask for children.  One night Nini was dreaming that she saw a full moon.

“My lovely wife, I think we will receive provision from God.” Said Aki.

The next morning Aki went to a river with his net to fish.  Suddenly something caught his attention.  In the middle of the river there was a wooden box floating on the water.  Then he grabbed it.

“What! A baby? Nini, God answer our pray! Look, it’s a cute baby.” Shouted Aki.

“Oh My God. Thank you veru much. We must give him a name. Oh! Ciung Wanara. Yeah, it’s a good name.” Said Nini happily.

Several years later Ciung Wanara grew up to be a handsome and smart boy.  The egg had become a cock.  Ciung loved cock fighting.  He went everywhere to play cock fighting game.  His cock was so quick and strong that it won all of its fights.  Soon he and his cock became famous in Galuh Kingdom.

Then the king of Galuh who had many cocks and also loved cock fighting heard the news.  So he ordered Lengser to find the boy.  As Lengser got to Ciung’s house he was surprised to see the box.  He realized that it was the box he threw into the river some years earlier.  When he asked Ciung’s father he was sure that Ciung was the king’s son from Pohaci Naganingrum.   That time he wanted to do a good deed for Ciung.

“Ciung, The King invite you to his palace for a cook fight. If you win the competiton, you can ask everything to The King.” Told Lengser.

“Okay, I agree for that. So, let’s go to the palace.” Said Ciung Wanara.

Later in the palace of Galuh Kingdom,  Ciung told the king that he had a condition for the cock fight.

“My Honor, if my cock wins, I want you to give me your kingdom.  If my cock loose,  then I will give my head. Do you agree, my honor?

The king agreed because he was sure that his cock would win.  Then in a fierce fight Ciung’s cock won the fight.  Everybody was surprised.  The king had no choice.  He had to keep his words and give his kingdom to ciung Wanara.  Then Lengser told the king that ciung was actually his own son from Pohaci naganingrum.  He revealed Dewi Pangreyep’s evil action.

The king was shocked and very angry.  He ordered his soldiers to arrest and punish Dewi Pangreyep.  This event made Prince Hariang Banga got very angry.  He quickly attacked Ciung Wanara.

“Stop it! For peace, I will divide my kingdom into two parts. The west of the Cipamali river for Hariang Banga while the eastern part for Ciung Wanara.” Said the King.

Finally, Ciung Wanara met his mother, Pohaci Naganingrum and lived happily in his kingdom.

The queen often cried. That was why Prabu went to the jungle. There he prayed to God every day, begging for a child.

“Oh My God. You have given everything for me. But, until now you haven’t given me a child. So, please show me and my wife your miracle.”

A few months later, the queen got pregnant. She was very happy. Nine months later, a princess was born. Prabu and Queen loved their beautiful daughter so much. They gave whatever she wanted. It made Princess turn into a very spoiled girl.

One day, the princess celebrated her 17th birthday party. Many people gathered in the palace. Then, Prabu took out a necklace which was made from gold and jewel.

"My beloved daughter, today id your birthday. May God always bless you. So, I give you this necklace. Please, wear this necklace," said Prabu.

"I don't want to wear it! It's very ugly! Can you give me anything except this necklace? I am pretty, it’s impossible for me to wear it, Dad." shouted the princess.

Then she threw the necklace. The beautiful necklace was broken. The gold and jewels were spread out on the floor. Everybody was very shocked.

“Oh My God, I never think that our princess will do that cruel thing.” Said a few of people.

In their silence, people heard the queen crying. Every woman felt sad and began crying too. Then, everybody was crying. Then, there was a miracle. Earth was crying.

Suddenly, from the underground, a spring emerged. It made a pool of water. Soon, the place became a big lake. The lake finally sank the kingdom.

Nowadays, people called the lake "Telaga Warna". It means "Lake of Color". On a bright day, the lake is full of color. These colors come from shadows of forest, plants, flowers, and sky around the lake. But some people said that the colors are from the princess's necklace, which spreads at the bottom of the lake.
